Although it is customary for the family of the bride to host some sort of an engagement party, it's perfectl acceptable for the family of the groom, the engaged couple (or anyone else) to host such an affair-or do without one altogether if you prefer. Most engagement parties are very informal, with invites made via phone, handwritten note, or evite. The party is usually held either at the host's home or in a restaurant.
The only hint of formality at an engagement party is the toast made by the father of the bride to the couple. This is usually followed by a responding toast from the groom. Anyone else wishing to offer a toast may then do so. When all the toasting is finished, it's on to the celebrating, which is, of course, only a minor version of the big celebration to come: your wedding.
